Signs Your Pool Filter May Need Cleaning
A dirty pool filter can reduce water circulation and make it difficult to keep your pool clean and balanced.
If you notice:
-
cloudy water
-
weak water flow
-
increased filter pressure
-
algae growth
-
debris returning to the pool
Then it may be time for a professional filter cleaning.
Arizona pools face unique challenges including dust storms, high winds, hard water, and year-round pool usage. These conditions cause filters to collect dirt, debris, oils, and minerals much faster than pools in other parts of the country.
Routine filter cleaning helps maintain proper circulation, improves water clarity, and can extend the life of your pool equipment.
Cartridge Pool Filters
In a cartridge filter system the pool water is forced through cylindrical cartridges that trap particles as small as 10 microns. The only way to clean a cartridge filter is by disassembling and spraying down the cartridge elements with a high pressure water.
-
Clean: every 3 - 6 months
-
Replace cartridges: every 3 - 5 years
Sand Pool Filters
These filters work by the pool water passing through a 400 to 700 pound bed of special filter sand. Debris as small as 40 microns are trapped by the sand as the water passes through. When enough debris is trapped the water flow is reversed by 'backwashing' and the trapped particles are removed.
-
Clean: when pressure rises to between 16 - 20 psi
-
Replace sand: every 4 - 6 years
Over time the integrity of the sand is reduced and it's ability to trap particles can be greatly diminished, it is recommended that filter sand be replaced every 4 to 6 years. If you are having difficulties keeping your pool water clear it is probably time to replace the filter sand.
D/E Pool Filters
Most efficient filters, D/E filters trap particles as small as 4 microns (too small to see with the naked eye). D/E filters contain filter elements that are coated with a white D/E powder (Diatomaceous Earth) as they start to get dirty the water flow is reversed (backwashed) and all the previously trapped dirt and debris are removed, once the water flow is changed back to normal new D/E powder is added to the pools skimmer to coat the grids once again.
-
Clean: every 1 year
-
Replace filters: every 4 - 6 years
Before & After Filter Cleaning

Does My Pool Filter Need Cleaning or Replacement?
Not every filter problem requires replacement.
In many cases, a professional cleaning can restore proper filtration and circulation.
However, cartridge elements, filter grids, and filter media eventually wear out and may need replacement after several years of use. Our technicians can inspect your system and recommend the most cost-effective solution.
